Weeds In the Wind

Photo opportunities in winter are not as obvious as in, say, spring, when everything is fresh and amazing. However, I’ve been trying to broaden my horizons a bit to work with what’s available. My go-to place for pictures (besides my back yard) is a wetlands preserve, and it’s almost always windy out there. It sometimes frustrates me, but I’ve been trying to put it to good use lately, getting photos of rippling water (ooh, maybe that’s another post) or, in this case, weed seeds.

Not sure what this is, but it makes me think of a ballet dancer.
Thistle. Hard and sharp on the outside, soft on the inside.
Cattail. This one reminds me of Santa Claus’s beard and mustache.

If you still enjoy that childhood pastime of blowing dandelion seeds, then you may want to try finding some cattails. The seeds don’t blow off as easily — you have to rub them off — but there’s a lot more of them, they make a huge mess, and it’s awesome. It’s a liberating way to spend some time on a sunny winter afternoon until spring gets here.
