I took a break from my house and my kids yesterday and spent a couple of hours at a local park. It was a beautiful day, and while it was a bit bright for photographing the birds and plants, it was well suited for water pictures. It felt cathartic to be outside, and specifically the pictures of water feel healing to me right now. Which is actually strange, since I don’t typically like water that much. I guess we do what is right in the moment.

I took over 1300 pictures, and I only kept 12, which is a low rate even for me. I wanted to get clear pictures of the shapes the water makes when it flows into a vertical pipe, particularly where it’s not smooth. However, I need more light. The autofocus doesn’t work well when there’s that little light, and apparently I’m not good at manually focusing on the water. It doesn’t help that I have to open my lens to its max of f/4 given the limits of the camera body, so there’s not much depth to work with when using a focal length of 315mm from a short distance. I’m thinking it will be better in the summer when the sun is higher and there should be more light in the pipe. Until then, I have lots of time to practice. “And miles to go before I sleep…”
